May 05, 1968 - Preparing To Face The Atlantic Alone. On Saturday (June 1), 43 yachts from 10 countries with 3, 000 miles of Lonely Atlantic ahead of them - set out from Plymouth single-handed for Newport, Rhode Island. Yesterday yachtsmen were stowing gear and stores in readiness for the start.
