Aug. 07, 1981 - Lack of Wind at Cowes Ends Pot of Gold Race. The contest dubbed the Pot of Gold Race, involving the British yacht Victory and the Australian Apollo V, did not finish within yesterday's decreet time limit and was abandoned. The match race, staged after a 0, 000 wager between Victory's owner Peter de Savary, and Alan Bond, who owns Apollo, had to be completed within 3 1/2 hours. Though the start was prompt at 8.30 am from Osborne Bay, the light Easterly breeze died soon after the yachts had completed the first leg of the 12 mile courses and that effectively was the end of the match.
