Boats - Sailing - Ships

Dec. 19, 1952 - American ship breaks in two near Leghorn Harbour. Crew rescued by Breeches Buoy and helicopter: The United States refrigeration ship Gromlet Reefer, 3, 805 tons, broke in two outside Leghorn harbour - after the fierce seas had broken her from anchorage in the harbour. Breeches buoy was used to take many of the crew off - and the last crew members were taken off by helicopter. The ship was carrying Christmas fare for American troops in Austria. Photo shows Breeches buoy is used to resume members of the crew - off Leghorn harbour
