Boats - Sailing - Ships

Aug. 08, 1953 - Prof. Piccard Goes under the sea to a depth of 3.450 feet.: Professor Piccard, the Swiss physicist, accompanied by his son, Jacques, recently made his first deep-sea dive in bathysphere Triesto, and succeeded in reaching a depth of 1, 052 metres (3, 450 feet). The point of descent was a few miles off Capri, the bathysphere having been towed there during the night from its base at Castellamare that the bathyspheres reached the sea bottom.
