Aug. 08, 1953 - Professor Piccard's Bathysphere is launched in Italy: Professor Piccard's Bathysphere, the vessel in which he hopes to explore the depths of the Tyrrhenean Sea, and set up a record dive of 13, 000-ft. was launched at Castellamare dio Stabia, Italy. The vessel consists of two main parts - a cigar-shaped structure of watertight compartments which will house the special liquid which will be used for surfacing, and a lower part which is the actual sphere from which observations will be made.
