Aug. 08, 1953 - Professor Piccard makes first descent in his new Bathysphere': Professor Piccard the famous Swiss Belgian physicist was accompanied by his son Jacques when he newly designed bathysphere Trieste, at Castellamara di Stabia, near Naples. He hopes to reach a depth of 13, 000 feet during experiments near the Islands of Ponza to study and photograph the sea bed. During these tests three dives of 40 feet, lasting a few minutes only were made. Photo shows the Trieste about to make her first dive near Naples
