Mar. 03, 1954 - Admiralty Survey Ship in the Thames. H.M.S. Vidal - Equipped with Helicopter: H.M.S. Vidal, first ship built for the Admiralty since the war especially for surveying duties and the first of the type to have a helicopter flight deck and hanger - arrived in the Thames today. The vessel has a length of 315 ft. and a beam of 40 ft - and the deck arrangement is designed to make possible the flying off and flying on of helicopter - for air survey, photography and transport of parties to shore observations stations. She carries three motor boats for survey purpose equipment with echo sounding apparatus. Photo shows A Hiller H.S.O. Helicopter is wheeled out on to the specially constructed flight deck from the hangar - seen behind - at Tower Pier today
