Aug. 17, 1954 - Russian Training Ship Heads For Plymouth Four-Day Radio Silence Ends.: The 300-ton Russian training ship Alfa, reported by the Russians as missing with 40 cadets on board, was last night heading slowly along the Devon coast towards Flymouth. Coastguards at Prawle Point sighted her a few miles out and watched her until dusk. At first she was under full canvas, but later watchers saw sails furled and assumed. She was expected to anchor in Flymouth Sound early today to take on provisions before resuming her voyage from Leningrad to the Black Sea. The Russian Admiralty yesterday called off its frantic request for a search for the ALFA, caused by the four-day silence.
