Nov. 11, 1953 - Ships now have outside elevator: The danger of climbing companion leaders or gangways is a thing of the past in 51 general purpose tankers being built in Britain for the Shell Petroleum fleet. The first of its kind in Britain, madr of a light aluminum alloy, the elevator can carry six men or half a ton, and is stable no matter how the ship is tipped. Photo shows the outside elevator fitted to the Helix, recently-launched first of the 51 tankers
