Dec. 12, 1953 - Unique funnel fitted to new P. and O. liner. The Arcadia takes shape.: The new P. and O. Liner Arcadia has been designed with a unique funnel to eliminate the danger of smuts falling on the long sports deck areas. The first two tiers of this are now casing were empty, three london double decker buses could be driven through it, side by side. The casing alone weighs 40 tons and with the addition of the uptakes and all internal fittings there will be a total weight of 85 tons. The new style of funnel is the result of close co-operation between builders and the P. and O.- and Messra. Thermotank in whose wind tunnels the funnel went through exhaustive tests to ensure efficiency of the design etc. Photo shows the scene as the huge - unique funnel is lowered into position on then new liner Arcadia
