Mar. 03, 1955 - The ship-to-air guided missile ship. The Girdleness': Plans for re-equipping the Royal Navy to meet the challenge of thermo-nuclear warfare described in the House of Commons during the debate on the Navy estimates. Mr. Thomas, First Lord of the Admiralty maintained that the Navy still had a vital role to play. It was said that guided weapons were far enough advanced for the Government to begin preparing ships to carry them. They would replace the cruiser fleet as it went out of active service. It was also announced that ship to air missile will be tested at sea next year in the experimental guided weapon ship Girdleness. When these tests had been completed it should be possible for further information on guided missiles etc. to be made public. Photo shows the Royal Navy guided Missile testing ship Girdleness
