May 05, 1956 - Submarine Lifeboat Prepares For Round The World Voyage: On Monday next May 7th, the first unsinkable submarine lifeboat will be launched at Esbjerg, Jutland. A Danish Seaman, Walter Westborg, will in the near future, sat off on a lone voyage round the world to demonstrate the new type of lifeboat resembling a submarine. The Boat was invented by Mr. Claus Soerensen, director of the Danish Greenland Fishing Comany and the West Jutland Machine Works. He was appalled at the loss of life when a Danish ship sank on Dec. 23rd, 1954, and the crew of 29 men perished, although all were able to live in lifeboats. The new appalled at the loss of life when a dAnish ship sank on Dec. 23rd, 1954, and the crew of 29 men perished, although all were able to leave in lifeboats. The new craft id Mr Scerensen's answer to the problem of finding a safer lifeboat. It is equipped with ventilatinapparatus, stabilisers so that it will remain upright, and a manhole. It is so designed that it is not necessary to launch it from a ship. In case of need, the crew go aboard, close the manhole, and remain there while the sinking ship is still afloat. When the ship goes down, the lifeboat, Mr Soeresen claims, will float off. There is also a hollow mast which can be used partly as a radio aerial and partly as an air inlet to the inside of the boat. A periscope has been replaced by a dome-shaped case so that the steersman can see in all directions. Apart from emergency food rations, there is enough room for 450 gallons of oil -enough for ten days continuous sailing
