May 05, 1956 - Submarine H.M.S. Explorer: This is the first photograph of the experimenta high speed submarines, H.M.S. (Lieut. Commander L.R. Bell-Davies, R.N.), which was provisionally accept into service with the Royal Navy on 8th. May 1956, from her builders, Messrs Vicket-Armstorng, of Barri-in-Furness. With a modern version of the diesel-electric propulsion system which can be segmented by turbine machinery, in which the energy is supplied by burning diesel fuel in decamped hydrogen peroxide, the explorer will serve to provide experience in the operation of the populsive combination and as a fast underwater target to train surface forces in the tactics which would required to destroy submarine with high underwater speeds. With an extreme length 225 6, and the breadth of 15 8, she will not be armed, Her peacetime complement will consist of four officers of nineteen ratings, The Explorer special turbine machinery has been developed under the direction of the Admiralty by a special design team at Messrs Vickers-Armstrong, Ltd; left by Dr G.H. Forsyth, M.B.E. Shew is fitted with the latest submarine escape arrangements. H.M.S. Explorer was launched by Lady Reid Young Wife, of Chairman of Vickers-Armstrong Ltd.on March 5th, 1954.
