May 05, 1955 - Norwegian Liner Aground Off Plymouth Hoe. As Seen From The Air. Never before has a liner come so close to Plymouth Hoe. So close, in fact, that the 6, 269 ton Venus is on the rocks. Twice yesterday tugs tried to refloat her. This morning's attempt left Venus as seen in this picture from the air. Five thousand people watched as tugs tried again last night - the liner lifted but remained fast on the rocks. Heavy gear and cargo is being removed to give her a better chance of being refloated at the next high tide
