Oct. 10, 1957 - The Atom Submarine sails in - After 14 days under the Ocean.: A world-record submarine dive of 14 days 3 12 hours was claimed for the United States Navys atom-powered submarine Nautilus by her commander, 36-year old Commander William R. Anderson, when he brought the submarine into Portland, Dorset yesterday. It was the Nautilus's first official visit to a foreign port. During her long spell under water, Nautilus travelled 5, 000 miles at more than 15 knots without once surfacing or snorkeling'.
