Boats - Sailing - Ships

1958 - Jim Wharram of Manchester - and his two woman crew of Raft. Outcast of the Islands'. Jim wharram of Wythenshave, Marchester and two German women - 19 year old Jutta Schultzerchonoff and 35 year old Ruth Merseburger sailed the Atlantic to the West Indie in a home-made catamaran raft. The raft broke up after 41 days at sea. Now they live on a 16ft. by 10 ft. raft with bamboo cane walls and floor and coconut thatched roof. Mr. Wharram said that he will be glad to get back to England- because he has become the Old Man Out of Trinidad. He said that many people have cut him dead - because he has two pretty girls in his crew - who live aboard the raft. Photo shows Jim Wharram with (left) ruth Meseburger and on right Jutta Schultzerhonoff aboard their raft at Port of Spain, Trinidad
