Jan. 02, 1958 - Modernisation of H.M.S. Victorious to be commissioned this month - H.M.S. Victorious, which will be commissioned on January 14th, was taken in hand for modernisation at Portsmouth Dockyard in October 1960. As a result she is now the world's most modern aircraft carrier and the first in the Royal Navy to be fitted with all of the British-developed aids to Naval flying - the fully angled flight-deck, steam catapults and mirror deck landing aids. The work carried out on the ship, built by Vickers-Armstrong on the Tyne and completed in May 1941 has been the largest task of its kind ever undertaken in a royal dockyard or a commercial shipyard in this country.
