Jan. 01, 1957 - Five Crowned - Twenty Yards From Safety Lifeboat Capsizes Off Stornaoway: Five men thrown from a capsizing lifeboat - died within 20 cards of the shore yesterday when they Government Fishery Protection Vessel Vaila was wrecked on a reef - fringed Hebridean island, 15. miles Stornaway. Only one of the Capsized boat's crew was among the 15 survivors - he was acting Captain - First Officer James Handerson..he as picked up because he was the only one who could be seen - he carried a torch which he flicked on and off..The others were carried away in the darkness. Photo Shows The most of the Vaila stands above the sea..The upturned lifeboat can be seen still attached to its davits
