Jan. 01, 1957 - Studying Mystery Damage to ships. The British Shipbuilding Research Association is using models in a testing tank made by Vickers Armstrongs at St. Albans, Herts, to study the mystery motion of the sea which can cause damage to ships bottom shell plating. When ships are pitching, high pressures are generated between their hulls and the water -the cause of which is unknown. A carriage above the testing tanks, which moves with the models, records what happened to them. Heavy weather conditions are created by a wave maker.
