Oct. 10, 1958 - Japanese Antartic Observation Ship Becomes An Aircraft Carrier: The Japanese Antartic observation ship SOYA 111 (2790 tons) has been fitted with a 156 sq. ft. flight deck which allows a large Sirkorsky 3.58 helicopter to take off and land. The cost of the reconstruction is130, 000. The ship leaves for Showa Base, Ongul Island in the Antartic on Nov 11th from Tokyo.
