Jul. 16, 1957 - Cargo steamer mate falls overboard in the Pacific - treads water for nine hours waiting for rescue: In the early hours of a morning last June in the Pacific 23 year old Douglas Wardrop second mate of the Cargo steamer British Monarch fell overboard. He was confident that his ship would return for him. He trod water for nine hours and Captain John Coutts retraced the course of his vessel exactly and picked him up making one of the most amazing rescues of all time.
