May 05, 1956 - Channel Ship Ablaze After Collision: The 9, 074-Norwegian tanker, Erling Borthen, burst into flames after colliding with the 7, 179-ton Panamanian steamer, Santa Rosa. The collison occurred in dense fog off Beachy Head such after dawn. One death is reported and six men severely burned, several of whom are members of the crew of the Santa Rosa. Rescue ships were severely hindered by the intense heat and cascading petrol set the sea on fire. Photo shows An aerial view showing a tug tied up alongside to play hoses on the burning tanker
