Dec. 12, 1957 - Round-The -world Submarine Home after eight years: H.M.S. Through (1, 090 Long tons) is believed to be the first submarine to sail around the World. She left Portsmouth, England. in October 1949 for Sydney, Australia, where she provided anti-submarine training for the Royal Australian and New Zealand Navies. Since then she has sailed 126, 021 miles and includes in her last voyage crossings of both the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. Picture shows: H.M.S. thorough returns to Portsmouth under the command of Lieutenant Commander Richard Mason. In background is the Foudroyant, captured by the British from the French in 1758, used by Lord Nelson a his flagship in 1799, veteran of battles against both the French and the Dutch, and in more recent times a training vessel
