May 05, 1956 - The Dana Rescuer Launched, New unique Submarine Lifeboat Prepare for Round The World Voyage. What is claimed to be the first unsinkable life boat was launched yesterday at Esbjerg, Jutland. Walter Westborg a Danish seaman is soon to start off on a round the world trip in the craft to demonstrate its unsinkable qualities. Resembling a submarine the vessel is the invention of Mr. Claus Soerensen, Director of the Danish Greenland Fishing Company. The boat is equipped with ventilation apparatus, stabilizers, etc. He claims that when a ship is sinking, the crew need only board the lifeboat, close the manhole and remain there. When a ship goes down the lifeboat just floats off. There is also a hollow mast for use as both a radio aerial and as air intake. A periscope has been replaced by a dome shaped casing to enable the steersman to see in all directions. The boat can carry emergency rations and 450 gallons of oil sufficient for ten days continuous sailing. Keystone Photo Shows: Walter Westborg seated at the controls of the new lifeboat.
