Jan. 01, 1958 - Modernisation of H.M.S. Victorious To Be Commissioned This Month: H.M.S. Victorious, which will be commissioned on 14th. of January, was taken in hand for modernisation at Portsmouth Dockyard in October 1950. As a result she is now the world's most modern aircraft carrier and the first in the Royal Navy to be fitted with all of the British-developed aids to Naval flying - the fully angled flight deck, steam catapults and mirror deck landing aids. The work carried out on the ship, built by Vickers-Armstrong on the Tyne and completed in May, 1941, has been the largest task of its kind ever undertaken in a Royal dockyard or commercial shipyard in this country.
