Jul. 07, 1959 - Atomic Islands Sets Sail: A man-made 3, 900-long-tons concrete island is being anchored on steel legs built into the bed of the Bristol Channel, England. 90 ft. in diameter and 60 ft. high, it will pipe 35 million Imperial gallon of seawater an hour under the sea bed to Hinckey Point Atomic Power Station for the cooling of two reactors. Now growing on the Somerset mainland, the new stations is due to go into operation in 1962 with an output of 500 MW. Photo shows The Island at the start of its first and last voyage of 2, 000 ft.
