Jul. 07, 1959 - Britain's Flying Saucer Crosses the Channel. Britain's Flying Saucer, the Saunders Roe Hovercraft, SR-N1, this morning skimmed across the Channel from Calais to Dover in one hour 55 minutes. Test pilot, Lieut. Commander Peter Lamb was at controls. The Hovercraft flies on a cushion of air just above the water. Photo shows the Hovercraft entering the harbour at Dover this morning, after it's Channel crossing from Clais
