Oct. 10, 1959 - Unsinkable Dinghy; A 12 ft Alpha sailing dinghy, claimed as unsinkable by its manufacturers because of its foam plastic hull, is put through its paces in the Solent, England. Foam plastic hulls are of thin layers of fibre glass reinforced plastic between which a layer of cellular plastic has been injected and allowed to foam and set. Alphas also have self sealing lockers, aluminum alloy masts and rubber stems, the latter two to reduce damage by knocks and collisions
