Mar. 03, 1957 - Six Americans Prepare for Round-The-World-Trip. From Hong Kong in 52ft. Yawl Six Americans-William St. C. Child Fowler Mike Merle-Smith Hovey T. Freeman: Juan H. Freeman, C. Pardee Erdman (Jnr) and Alexander Hugg are in Hong Kong Preparing for start of their world cruise - and for taking part in the classic Bermuda race the 635 handicap race for sailing craft from Newport Rhodes Island to the Bermuda Islands. About 80 bats many made in American and Europe compete in the race. Their craft is the 52 ft. yawl Mah Jong - just competed in Hong Kong - where luxury yachts can be built to specification at approx. half the cost in any other part of the world. It is fifted with Marcedes-Bens engines. On their cutward tour they will sail from Hong Kong to the East Indies, then westward to India, the Red Sea and into the Mediterranean through the Sues Canal. After about six months in the Med. they will sail across the Atlantic to the Bermuda Islands for refitting before taking part in the Bermuda 1958 race.
