Boats - Sailing - Ships

Feb. 26 No School Bus For This Pupil.. For young Martin Jenkins (7) school is more than sums ans compositions. He has to battle the elements - the wind and the sea in order to attend his classes. For he is the only schoolboy left on the island of Bryher in the Scillies school. So it means Martin has to cross the often treacherous half-mile strip of sea between his own and the neighbouring island. His father and grandfather have come to the rescue and daily row Martin over. Seas can be rough in these parts. You can take skiddy across in the morning and by afternoon a south-westerly will have sprung up and conditions can be fairly poorly. But when it's your own you make the effort somehow, says grandfather Jenkins, a boat an all his life. Photo Shows: Martin (7) and his father Mr. Leonard Jenkins make the journey across the half-mile strip of sea to the school
