Feb. 26 First HM-2 Sidewall Hovrcraft To Enter Service Shortly. Hovermarine's first HM-2, forerunner of a new range of sidewall-type hovercraft, has successfully completed preliminary trials off Southampton. Due to enter service shortly, when all interior fitting out has been completed, the HM-2 makes her bow after two years intensive research and development by an independent British company, Hovermarines Ltd. of Southampton. Designed to carry between 60 and 65 passengers, or five tons payload, at speeds of up to 35 knots, the first HM-2 has been built for British Rail Hovercraft Ltd. and will operate in their Seaspeed service between Portsmouth and Ryde, Isle of Wight.
