Nov. 11, 1958 - Masts of H.M. Yacht Britannia hunged in readiness for visit to Canada.: To allow H.M. Yacht Britannia to pass under the bridges of the St. Lawrence Seaway - during the Royal Visit to Canada next year the tops of her foremast and mainmast (118ft. and 123 ft. high res.) have been hinged in order that they can be lowered when necessary. The hinged masts were demonstrated at Portsmouth this morning. Photo shows two members of the crew - A/B. Garnham and L/Seaman Ward seen on the mainmast after unhinging the mast at the shroud rings enabling the top seventeen feet to be lowered back at an angle of 40 deg. Seen at Portsmouth today
