Dec. 12, 1958 - Gorch Fock at last in her home harbour: The new school ship of the German marine Gorch Fock landed last week-end at her home harbour Kiel after a voyage with difficulties from Hamburg through the Kiel Canal. Although the masts had been shortened by 4 metres before entering the Kiel Canal it was impossible to get the ship under one of the bridges across the Canal, so that they had to lower the water level by 40 centimeters and the ship had to load 20 more tons ballast. In the middle of January the school ship will go on to the sea with a crue of 70 men and will then put up her 2000 square metres of sails; until now she was only driven by motors.
