Feb. 26 H.M.S. Centaur: An aerial view of H.M.S. Centaur, the latest aircraft carrier to be commissioned in the Royal Navy, seen duringaher trials. Her sister ship H.M.A. Albion, also of the Hermes class is nearing completion. H.M.S. Centaur is the first British Aircraft Carrier to have an angled flight deck - the British invention which has been adopted by the United States Navy. The angled flight deck improves the efficiency of the modern carrier in allowing faster and larger naval aircraft to operate with increased frequency. She is 757 feet (650 feet between perpendiculars) long, and has a beam of 90 feet, the extreme breadth being 120 feet. Her armament consists of 11 multiple and single barrelled Bofors gun mountings, controlled by modern close range director systems. She carries a complement of over 1300 officers and men, varying according to the number and type of aircraft embarked. The Centaur together with the Albion, are the first warships of their size to be completely fitted with canvas bunks for all ratings, while the living quarters have been designed on those which exist in the battleship H.M.S. Vanguard. Mess decks are fitted with tubular steel furniture, air conditioning and mechanised catering arrangements
