Feb. 26 Australia Establishes Permanent Station In Antartica: Australia has established her first permanent scientific research base on the Antartic continent where important minerals - possibly uranium - are believed to exist. Named Mawson Station, it will supplement valuable geological meteorological and other scientific data now emanating regularly from Australia's other two permanent Antartica Research Stations at Heard and Macquarie Islands. A ten-man team has been left at Mawson Station, nearest human habitation to the South Pole. The party left Australia for their 12 months sojourne in Antarctica in January (1954). They sailed in the ice-ship Kistan Dan, which returned to Melbourne at the end of March. Photo shows Adelie penguins watch as the ice-ship Kista Dan slowly breaks her way through an unbroken 20 mile stretch of land-fast ice- the frozen surface of the sea barring access to that part of the Antarctic mainland chosen for Mawson Station
