Mar. 27 Unique Submarine Rescue Vessel Disclosed. A revolutionary vessel is being planned for deep sea rescue missions. Measuring 49 ft. long it is designed to perform at depths up to 3, 500 feet. Developed by the Lockheed company of California for the U.S. Navy, the craft is officially known as a Deep Submergence Rescue vehicle. The craft has a unique 3-sphere inner hull capable of withstanding extreme pressure. The bell-shaped hatch beneath the 3 spheres is designed to mate with a distressed submarine to allow under water transfer of personnel. When operational in 1968, the vessel will form part of a 24-hour world wide rescue system.
