Apr. 17 Vasa Sails Again. 17th Century Warship Raised From The Weep: On a fine afternoon in August, 1628, the proud ship Vasa - named for the Swedish Royal Family - set sail from Stockholm on her maiden voyage. She was the pride of the fleet of Gustav 11 Adolf, a welcome new warship to a Sweden engaged in tee Thirty Years'. Less than a nautical mile from the quay where thousands of spectators watched, off the island of Beckholm, a sudden squall healed the ship over, water gushed through the open gun-ports, and with all her flags flying, Vasa sank to the bottom of the ocean, under 110 feet of water. She was never recovered although several attempts were made. Then one day in 1956 a Swedish Admiralty engineer by the name of Andere Franzen who was interested in the recovery of old sunken ships, brought up from the bottom, a plug of blackened oak. This discovery, after years of searching, led to the subsequent recovery of the world's oddest preserved and fully identified ship, less than five years later Vasa was again afloat. In astonishingly good condition, she is now undergoing restoration to transform her from a dead worship of another age to a unique of Vasa is now resting in her home for the next six years a museum in Stockholm.
