Destroyer Barrosa passing through a shamrock of boiling foam caused by the explosion of her anti-submarine depth charges, Her anti-submarine weapon, known as the Squid, flings its missiles ahead of the ship, a method of attack which has outdated the wartime method of dropping depth charges astern of the ship. This aerial photograph was taken during an exercise in the mediterranean as the Barrosa steamed through the pattern which her exploding charges had made a few seconds earlier. An improved Squid had since been developed for Britain's anti-submarine ships and this automatically locates its quarry. sets its missiles to explode at correct depth and then aims and fires without human aid
