Apr. 18 Miles Of Lights At Southend: The wonderful display of light on the Pier at Southend which stretches from the beach one and a third miles out to sea. Southend Has Biggest Illuminations Ever: This year the autumn illuminations at Southendeon-Sea are the biggest and best the town have ever planned. They include 1, 000 floodlights and 75, 000 lamps strung out on miles of cable stretching from Westcliff to Thorpe Bay along the town's 71/2 miles of Promenade. Stretching one and a third miles out to sea light a long, illuminates finger is the famous Southend Pier magnificently illuminated. British Railways have organised a special programme of day, half-day and evening excursions to Southend during the illuminations
