Sep. 09, 1961 - The world's largest cable-laying ship was launched.at Hamburgs Schlieker-Dockyard on Sept. 24th being christened with the name of Long Lines (Long Lines). Hamburg had won the contract to construct the Amendment Telephone and Technology Company's cable late against world wide competition from Japaneses British Spanish shipyards The new A.T. and T. Ship for 17, 000 grt, is 510 feet long and will be one of fastest ships on the high seas in the specialized field of cable-laying at 7 or 8 knots compared with 3 1/2 knots per hour for other of this category. It is expected to first operate in the Pacific having a capacity of 1800 sea-miles of telephone cable without re-loading
