Oct. 10, 1961 - First submarine for German navy: The first submarine built for the German navy has been launched at the Howaldtswerke, Kiel, (Howaldtswerke, Kiel). Experts call this new type of a submarine a techinical sensation. The German navy has ordered twelfe boats of the same type. The new submarine is 40 metres long and has 350 tons. A crew of 20 attends to eight torpedos and to the Diesel - and elektromotors. The speed shall be very fast but is highly secret. Outfitted with a Schnorchel (Schnorchel) this new type will drive mainly under water. Any actions on the surface will be exception. Photo Keystone'.
