Oct. 10, 1961 - U Boat No. 1 is launched, first Postwar Submarine for West German Navy; The First U Boat of the German Postwar fleet was launched during the week end at Kiel - famous as the center of wartime underwater craft. U Boat no. 1 is said to be extremely fast but the actual speed is secret and she is able to stay under the water indefinitely. She weighs 350 tons is more than 120 ft. long and has eight torpedo tubes. This craft is the first of 12 on order and its launching is said to be the re-birth of West Germany as a Naval Power.
