Boats - Sailing - Ships

Jun. 06, 1961 - A speed off the English coast is the Motor Yacht Mercury built for Mr. Stavros Niarchos, a Greek millionaire ship owner. Powered by three Bristol siddeley Marine Proteus gas turbines, Seangoing version of the turboprop engines that power the giant Bristol Britaiia airliner, she can do over 50 knots and is believed by her British manufactures to be the fastest private yacht in the world. Despite her high speed, again say the manufacturers, she manoeuvres easily at slow speeds because the Marine Proteus embodies a free power turbine. Manufacturers: Vosper Ltd. Portsmouth, Hampshire, England
