Nov. 11, 1961 - Jet and Hover Craft: A jet- propelled speed boat (foreground) and a hovercraft speed alongside off Southampton, England. Both are British development projects. The hovercraft, named VA-1, capable of up to 40 m.p.h. was built to provide information for future commercially practical craft. Its successors VA-2, a small version to carry four or five passengers, and VA-3, capable of carrying 24 passengers or two long-tons of cargo, are already under construction. VA-3, to be ready for trials in January, will have a cruisin speed of 70 m.p.h. on land or water
