Jul. 07, 1962 - Flying Crab hovercraft begins passenger service: History was made yesterday when the 11-ton 24-seater Vickers-Armstrong 3 Hovercraft completed the 19-mile stretch between Wallasey and Rhyl across the Dee estuary in half an hour at a speed of nearly 70 mph. Looking like some giant flying crab it took the first passengers for £2 return. The service is for 8 weeks, possible 14, 000 have been sold already. Holiday makers will save up to 1 1/2 hours on the journey. Photo shows a three-quarter serial shot of the VA 3 Hovercraft at speed off the coast of Rhyl
