Jul. 07, 1962 - The Flying Crab Hovercraft Begins First Passenger Service: The Hovercraft made history yesterday at 60 mph. looking like some giant flying fish or crab it took the first passengers across the Dee estuary from Wallasey to Herald the start of a regular service. The 24 seater 11 ton Vickers-Armstrong VA 3 completed the 19 mile trip to Rhyl without a hitch. On Friday, the scheduled service starts and more than 3000 tickets have been sold already. The service is for 8 weeks 6 days a week, 6 times a day. Cost 1 single, 1 return. Yesterday trip in the Irish Sea took exactly half an hour, usually done in two hours on summer roads.
