1963 - Important Breakthrough In Hovercraft Development: the Westland Aircraft Company have announced an important breakthrough in the development of their hovercraft. They have designed a flexible skirt made of rubber which will enable it to ride over much larger solid obstacles, ditches, and more particularly bigger waves without having to increase the power. This development will mean a great improvement in the potential of these craft and because of the increased power that can be harnessed without any addition to the weight. Costs will be able to be greatly reduced. Photo Shows A model of the SR N5, which although it only weighs 7 tons, has the performance of a 40 to craft without Skirts'. This craft costs 5, 600. The skirt can be clearly seen
