Jan. 01, 1965 - American Army Tests the Sun powered Boat'. This experimental craft with a Haitian designed hull is collapsible - has four 12-tolt batteries for auxiliary power - solar panels and two small trolling type motors. The solar panels are to convert sunshine into electrical power which in turn operates the motors or recharges the batteries. Operation is possible either directly from the solar panels or from the auxiliary power source of the batteries. Speed of the craft ranges from 2.6 to 4.5 m.p.h. depending upon solar intensity - number of panels in use and theoperational environment. Experimentation on this craft and uses of solar power is being conducted by the United States Army General Equipment Test Activity - Fort Les, Virginia - an activity of the Army Test and Evaluation Command - Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland
