Oct. 10, 1962 - Giant Japanese cargo carrier.: The San Juan Pioneer, the largest dual-purpose (iron-ore and crude oil) cargo carrier of its kind in the world, was given a three day trial run at the Nippon Kokan shipyard in Japan and turned over to its owners, the San Juan carriers Ltd. last week, with a cargo capacity of 69, 000 tons, the vessel will be used to ship iron ore from San Juan, Peru to Japan, and in the opposite direction to carry Sumatran oil to Los Angeles.
