Jul. 07, 1964 - Dockyard Riggers Splice The Mainbrace As The Re-Rigging Of The Victory Nears Completion. The re-rigging of Nelson's Victory of Portsmouth has been almost completed, and sixteen civilian riggers were invited by the Captain of the Dockyard, Captain J.A.MARRACK R.N. to unofficially splice the mainbrace today. The work of replacing the old sisal ropes of the VICTORY with Italian hemp, which will last a considerable of years, was started last October. The major part, involving the main mast, for mast, bowsprit and jibboom, has new been finished. To replace the rigging of the VICTORY 34 miles of hemp, 3-tons of spun yarn, 300 yards of old canvas and 224 gallons of tar are needed.
